| Basic Kanienkeha Alphabet The Kanienkeha English Character alphabet uses aproximately 11 of the English languages characters. These characters that are used are the following: a - e - h - i - k - n - o - r - s - t - w In some of the older materials in print various other characters were used such as the following: d - z - y These characters are still used by some people but mainly are no longer used in many new materials containing the Kanienkehaka language. Not to mention one will find a few linguistical materials with several other characters. Today thanks to the standardization of the Kanienkehaka language just about every Kanienkehaka territory uses these first few characters. Vowel Sounds In the Kanienkehaka language there are also 11 vowel sounds within the language. The following vowel sounds are as follows: a - e - i - o - en - on - ia - ie - io - ien - ion It is also important to note that when reading older Kanienkeha materials some people have replaced some of the vowel sound characters with Y's, and D's. This depends upon where and what materials you might happen to come across. Though none the less its important to realize this as this site will contain such words. Consonant Sounds The Kanienkehaka language also contains 15 basic consonant sounds that make up a varying array of sounds when combined with any number of combinations within the language. The following consonant sounds are as follows: h - k - kh - n - r - s - sh - t - th - w - wh - kw - khw - ts - ths It is important to note to anyone who has never heard the Kanienkehaka language that even though these consonant, and vowel sounds are in English characters. The language by no means is totally pronounced like the English characters at any given time.
